What is WebP Format?

About the Developer

WebP was developed in around 2010. This format was produced as an outcome of a project launched by Google to reduce the size of the images and the media files while retaining their quality to produce better media file formats to be uploaded to the web pages. The sister project of the WebP format was to develop WebM media file format, which is not open source as the WebP format.

WebP Format

This image format is developed through a set of algorithms. These are called commonly as Compression algorithms. They are of two main types of Lossy compression and the lossless compression. When we subject an image to lossy compression, a certain amount of the quality of the image is lost during the compression process. But when it comes to lossless compression, the quality is fully retained. Unlike usual compression techniques, WebP compression is reversible to its original formats. During both the compression processes the size of the image is reduced by around 20% each. Further, the latest type of images supported by WebP format is the GIF images. You can convert one GIF to a series of WebP images and convert them back to GIF as well.

WebP format is developed with the intention of reducing the file size of the images uploaded to the web. Google has also developed a toolkit to support the encoding and decoding of the WebP format including the source code for the project. This enables developers to create other WebP converters such as WebP Online Converter as well.
