WebP Photoshop Tool
To open your WebP file in “Photoshop” you have to start by opening a suitable plugin based on the device you use.
And if you are wondering about an appropriate plugin for your requirement, here are two links of such plugins that you can consider using;
This plugin is provided by Telegraphic. This plugin supports 32bit and 64bit photoshop on Windows and Mac (CS2/3/4/5/6). This was updated for the last time in 2013 and now it is at its version 1.2b4. Thus this plugin saves your WebP files using an older version of the WebP format.
This plugin is provided by fnordware and it supports Photoshop both on Windows (with 32bit and 64bit) and Mac. This plugin was last updated on 16th December 2015 and in beta (v0.5b9) at this moment.
Using the links above you can start with downloading a suitable plugin. The process of installation of either one of these links is the same even if your device is mac or windows.
How to download & install
To select the correct version of the plugins, find out first what version of Photoshop you are using: 32-bit or 64-bit. You can do that by simply opening Photoshop and then going to “Help” > “About Photoshop …” in the upper menu bar. You’ll see here a line containing your version, which ends with either x86 (32-bit) or x64 (meaning 64-bit).
First, you have to figure out the version of your device’s photoshop that you are about to use: it can be 32bit or 64bit. Through this step, you can select the correct and compatible version of the plugins for your device. For this step,
- Open Photoshop
- Go to “Help”
- Go to “about photoshop…” in the upper menu bar
- Choose the line that contains your version. That should end with either x86 (32-bit) or x64 (meaning 64-bit).
The process of downloading and extracting the archive containing the plugin file is now complete. And now you have to choose the correct Photoshop Plugins folder on your PC and copy/paste the file you created above. Before you copy the plugin file make sure to close the Photoshop.
How to save the WebP Photoshop Tool
Once the copying is over,
- Open Photoshop once again.
- Click on “File” and go to “open”
- Choose “WebP format” from the drop-down which comes next And then when it comes to saving your WebP files on Photoshop, use “Save As” or Ctrl+Shift+S if you are using a windows device.
And then if you are using The Telegraphic plugin, it will ask you to choose two available formats in a drop-down list; one for lossless and one for lossy as you are using WebP format.
However, in the fnordware plugin, the user is provided with a dialog window containing both lossless and lossy compression options in its Photoshop tool.
Summary
Moreover, if you find it hard to decide whether to save your WebP files as lossy or lossless in Photoshop Tool; it would be helpful for you to know that saving it as lossy is quite similar to saving it as a JPEG, and saving it as lossless is quite similar to saving it as a PNG.
